For those of us who reached 30 minutes of IXL in a week, we celebrated with lunch in the classroom! The last 2 pictures I forgot to post from the last IXL Celebration! Keep up the great math work! Just think, you are getting smarter in math too!
We set an IXL goal and we reached it. Our goal was 13 hours of IXL time in one week! Thanks to Christopher for putting extra effort in and doing about 12 hours of IXL on his own! We got to wear pajamas to celebrate! We will set another goal this week. Next time, we up the challenge and the celebration goes to the people putting in 30 minutes or more to the goal! There are opportunities to work on this at school, also!
Today we had A DAKOTA COUNTY snowplow crew come to visit us and teach about snow safety. Three things we learned are:
1. Don't build snowforts near the roads, because snowplows can't see you and cars can slip on the road and crash into your fort. 2. Don't throw snowballs at cars and snowplows, because the drivers can't see you and it could cause an accident. 3. Go sledding with a buddy, because if you get hurt your friend can get you help! We made it to Fort Snelling and the rain stayed away! It was a great time! Fort Snelling is a place where soldiers trained to get ready for war. A lot of the places that we saw were from the 1800's. One of our favorite places was the blacksmith. Here we learned that they make iron things; such as horseshoes, axes, and iron pots for cooking. These were made by putting iron in hot coals and pumping air on the coals to make them hotter. The hot coals make the iron soft to form metal objects. The blacksmith made us an iron nail. We learned about the hospital. Ask your child how the green toilet works!? They didn't know about germs either, back then! It was exciting to go up to the watch tower and see all of Fort Snelling. A few more highlights of our trip were; the jail, how the slaves worked, the one room school; and the house where General Snelling lived! Enjoy the pictures!
This concludes our Science Unit on Light and Sound. The above pictures show the class using mirrors to redirect sunlight. We learned about light rays and how light reflects onto other things using something with a shiny surface. We also learned that mirrors refract (or break) light rays to direct the rays to another direction. Starting Monday, the third grade classes will rotate and our claSS will go to the computer lab with Ms. Waters! Ugh! Still haven't figured out how to rotate pictures! Anyway...Here are a few fun pictures
We enjoyed the mobile lab in our class on Thursday. We started on IXL in school. IXL is a purchased website to support our math curriculum. Kids were excited to start using it in school. We are going to set a class goal of time spent on IXL and work toward a class celebration! We will keep you posted!
We have had a lot of fun with SOUND! We have learned about pitch, volume, vibration and sound all through experiments. Have your child tell you about them! Next week we will discuss light!
